On Wednesday, the Department of Fisheries, Andaman & Nicobar Administration, initiated a Ghost Net Removal Drive at the Fish Landing Centre, Junglighat to enhance sustainable fisheries and safeguard the marine ecosystem. Ghost nets, abandoned fishing gear, pose risks by ensnaring marine life and worsening plastic pollution. Their removal is crucial for marine biodiversity conservation and ensuring a safe fishing environment. During a recent campaign, around 600 kilograms of abandoned fishing nets were responsibly disposed of at the Fish Landing Centre, led by Hemanto Kirtonia and supported by fisheries officials and the fishing community.
The Department of Fisheries emphasized proper disposal of damaged nets and responsible fishing practices to ensure sustainable marine resources, advising fishermen to avoid abandoning gear and to deposit unusable nets at designated points for scientific disposal.
