Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the immense potential of the bamboo industry in Northeast India and its economic prospects while addressing the 133rd episode of his widely acclaimed radio programme, “Mann Ki Baat,” on Sunday. During the programme, the Prime Minister emphasised how the people of the Northeast are achieving self-reliance through bamboo cultivation.

He cited inspiring examples of Bijoy Sutradhar from the Gomati district of Tripura and Pradip Chakraborty from South Tripura, who have successfully captured global markets with bamboo-based handicrafts and decorative items. He also mentioned how youths in Nagaland are producing a variety of food products from bamboo shoots, while farmers in Mizoram are utilizing bamboo to construct greenhouses for agriculture.

Additionally, the Prime Minister referred to the members of “Lagast Bamboo Enterprise” in Gangtok, Sikkim, who are producing world-class handcrafted bamboo products. The Prime Minister encouraged citizens of the country, as well as the global community, to purchase bamboo products and consider them as meaningful gifts for friends and family.

He also remarked that the Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati, with its bamboo-based structures, stands as a testament to the region’s thriving bamboo industry. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed gratitude to the Prime Minister for emphasising the potential of the bamboo economy in the Northeast.
