Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) has achieved a major manufacturing milestone as its Chakan facility in Maharashtra crossed cumulative production of three million vehicles. The milestone vehicle was the BE 6 electric sport utility vehicle (SUV), marking a significant achievement for the company’s manufacturing operations.

The company stated that the facility produced its latest one million vehicles in just 27 months, compared with the 107 months required to manufacture the first one million vehicles after production began in December 2009. The achievement highlights the rapid expansion and efficiency of the Chakan plant.

Spread across 657 acres, the facility currently manufactures 19 models and more than 450 variants, including passenger vehicles, electric vehicles (EVs), and commercial vehicles. The plant supports both internal combustion engine (ICE) and electric vehicle production.

Mahindra said the Chakan facility uses advanced Industry 4.0 technologies, including artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, 5G connectivity, and digital traceability systems. The plant has around 1,500 robots, with more than 98 per cent automation in the body shop, along with seven multi-model assembly lines and autonomous mobile robots for material handling.

The company also highlighted its sustainability initiatives, stating that over 50 per cent of the facility’s energy needs are met through renewable sources. The plant is water-positive, returns 131 per cent of the water it uses to nature, and is certified as Zero Waste to Landfill, reflecting Mahindra’s focus on sustainable manufacturing.
