Businesses involved in plastic packaging activities in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands have been directed to register on the Central Pollution Control Board’s (CPCB) Common Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) Portal. Authorities have warned that eligible entities cannot continue operations without mandatory registration.
The requirement comes under the Plastic Waste Management Rules, 2016, as amended, and the EPR guidelines introduced in 2022. It covers producers, importers, brand owners, manufacturers of plastic raw materials and plastic waste processors.
Businesses engaged in recycling, waste-to-energy conversion, waste-to-oil processing and industrial composting are also required to comply with applicable registration provisions. Micro and small enterprises are covered under relevant categories.
The CPCB has further strengthened transaction-based reporting on the portal. Transactions involving unregistered entities will generally be discontinued, subject to specified exceptions for certain micro and small brand owners and plastic waste processors.
Concerned businesses have been advised to complete registration, maintain proper transaction records, fulfil their applicable EPR targets and submit annual returns within the prescribed framework.
The regulations aim to improve accountability across the plastic packaging supply chain by ensuring that businesses fulfil their responsibilities towards waste management.
Authorities have cautioned that non-compliance may invite appropriate action under the applicable rules. Businesses have therefore been urged to review their registration status and complete the required formalities without delay.
