Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued a sharp warning on April 16, 2026, stating that the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) are fully prepared to resume “Operation Roaring Lion” against Iran the moment the current ceasefire expires. Speaking from the Kirya in Tel Aviv, Netanyahu emphasized that while Israel remains in coordination with the United States, the campaign to “smash the Iranian nuclear and missile programs” is not over. He argued that the recent pause has only been used by Tehran to reorganize and asserted that Israel will not hesitate to strike “without mercy” if its security conditions—specifically the total demilitarization of Hezbollah and a halt to Iranian nuclear enrichment—are not met by next Tuesday.

In contrast, the United States is aggressively pursuing a second round of high-stakes diplomacy. President Donald Trump hinted that peace talks could resume in Islamabad within the next 48 hours, praising Pakistani Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir for his role as a mediator. Despite the collapse of last weekend’s talks—where Vice President JD Vance walked out over Iran’s refusal to surrender its enriched uranium—the White House is “inclined” to try one final time to avoid a full-scale regional war. While Washington has tightened its naval blockade on Iranian ports, Trump’s “Economic Fury” strategy is intended to force a diplomatic capitulation rather than a prolonged ground war, even as Israel prepares its military for a much more direct and violent escalation.
