Olympic medallist pugilist from Assam, Lovlina Borgohain won gold for India at the ongoing Asian Games in Japan, defeating China’s Bao Ziyi 5-0 (unanimous decision),
to win the first ever gold medal in the 75-kg weight category.
In the previous edition of Asian Games at Hangzhou in China in 2923, she won a silver medal.
She is also the second woman after Mary Kom to win a gold medal at the Women’s Boxing Category in the Asian Games since 2014.
The victory came on her birthday, adding a prestigious gold to her career accolades.
The achievement complements a significant tournament run, including a semifinal win over Kazakhstan’s Natalya Bogdanova by a 3-2 split decision, making Borgohain the first Indian woman boxer to reach consecutive Asian Games finals.
Born on October 2, 1997, in Golaghat district, Assam, Borgohain previously earned silver in the women’s 75kg category at the Hangzhou Asian Games, won bronze at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, and became world champion in the 75kg weight class in 2023.
Additionally, she claimed gold at the 2022 Asian Championships and silver at the 2026 Commonwealth Games.
Her Asian Games gold adds to a distinguished career that includes receiving the Arjuna Award in 2020 and the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award in 2021.
India’s medal count at the Aichi-Nagoya Games currently stands at 70, comprising 12 gold, 24 silver, and 34 bronze medals.
