India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir has voiced strong support for T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav amid growing concerns over the batter’s recent dip in form. Speaking during a discussion on JioHotstar, Gambhir stated that Yadav’s performance with the bat is not a cause for worry, as the team has collectively embraced an ultra-aggressive style of play that inherently involves risks and occasional failures.
“Honestly, Surya’s batting form doesn’t concern me because we have committed to an ultra-aggressive template in our dressing room. When you embrace this philosophy, failures are inevitable,” Gambhir said.
Yadav, who led India to victory in the Asia Cup 2025 held in the UAE, managed only 72 runs in seven innings during the tournament. Despite the team’s overall success, his individual performance has drawn criticism. However, Gambhir defended the captain’s approach, noting that the team prioritizes intent and fearless cricket over conservative scoring.
“It would be easy for Surya to score 40 runs off 30 balls and avoid criticism, but we have collectively decided that it’s acceptable to fail while pursuing this approach,” Gambhir added.
Yadav, now 35, has scored just 100 runs in 12 T20I matches in 2025, with his highest being an unbeaten 47 against Pakistan. Yet, his leadership and commitment to the team’s philosophy have earned him continued backing from the coaching staff.
The coach also highlighted the strong bond between himself and Yadav, dating back to their time together at Kolkata Knight Riders. “Our relationship is that of elder and younger brothers,” Yadav said in a recent interview, reflecting on their journey from IPL teammates to national team captain and coach.
As India prepares for the upcoming T20I series against Australia, Gambhir’s endorsement of Yadav signals a unified front and a long-term vision for the team’s playing style.
