In a thrilling football match early Tuesday morning IST, Morocco defeated the Netherlands in a penalty shootout to advance to the Round of 16 of the World Cup. After the match ended 1-1 in regulation and extra time, Morocco won 3-2 on penalties.

Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou saved the Netherlands’ fifth penalty taken by Crysencio Summerville. Striker Ismael Saibari then scored to seal Morocco’s victory.

The Netherlands took the lead in the second half through a goal from Cody Gakpo. But just before full time, in injury time, Issa Diop equalised for Morocco with a brilliant header, taking the match into extra time.

Following this historic win, Morocco will face Canada in a crucial Round of 16 match scheduled for next Saturday in Houston.

Notably, both teams fought intensely on the field and both goalkeepers made several excellent saves. In the end, Morocco prevailed in the battle of nerves to keep their World Cup campaign alive.
