The Union government has approved a proposal to establish the Centre of Excellence for Studies in Classical Assamese at Tezpur University.
Sharing the news on social media, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma described it as a proud moment for every Assamese, in Assam, across India and around the world.
“After Assamese was accorded the status of a Classical Language, we had been pursuing the establishment of a dedicated centre for its study with the Government of India. I am delighted to share that the Centre has approved the Centre of Excellence for Studies in Classical Assamese at Tezpur University,” Sarma wrote on his X handle.
He said this Centre will strengthen research, digitisation, preservation and dissemination of our rich linguistic and literary heritage, so that the glory of the language reaches generations to come.
He expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Education Minister Pralhad Joshi for this decision.
