The CBI on Thursday arrested proclaimed offender Arup Das alias Bapi Das from Guwahati in BJP member Avijit Sarkar murder case relating to West Bengal 2021 post-poll violence.
The accused was at large since registration of FIR in 2021, and he never joined investigation/trial. The CBI had announced a cash reward of Rs.50,000 for information leading to the arrest of absconding accused.
The accused has been arrested by the CBI based on human intelligence and technical inputs.
Earlier, in compliance to the order of the Calcutta High Court dated August 19, 2021, the CBI registered the instant case on 25 by taking over Narkeldanga Police Station FIR No.124/2021 relating to alleged murder of Avijit Sarkar on May 2, 2021 at Sitalatala Lane, Kolkata.
After completion of investigation, the CBI filed chargesheet and supplementary chargesheets against 38 accused persons in 2021 and 2025, including Arup Das alias Bapi Das as well as Paresh Pal (the then MLA of TMC) and the then TMC Councillors – Swapan Samaddar and Papiya Ghosh, under different sections of IPC. The case is under trial in the Court of City Sessions Judge, Calcutta.
The arrested accused will be brought to Kolkata from Guwahati for production before the Competent Court in Calcutta on Friday.
