Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday spoke to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma over the phone to review the situation in the state.
Speaking to the media after visiting the flood-hit areas of Golaghat district, the Chief Minister said that Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke to him over the telephone today to review the prevailing flood situation in Assam. He said the Shah had informed him that an inter-ministerial central team would soon visit Assam to undertake a comprehensive assessment of the damage caused by flood and examine the assistance required from the Central Government for relief, rehabilitation and reconstruction.
“The flash floods, triggered by a cloudburst upstream, have wreaked havoc on the lives of our people. I am grateful to the Home Minister for standing firmly with the people of Assam during this difficult time,” Sarma said.
In Golaghat district, Sarma assessed the extent of damage and reviewed the ongoing rescue and relief operations.
He also visited a number of relief camps in the district, interacted with flood affected people taking shelter there and reviewed the relief and rehabilitation measures being undertaken.
The Chief Minister visited the relief camp set up at Bhaskar Senior Basic School in Kamarbandha, where 178 flood affected people are currently taking shelter. He interacted with the inmates to understand their problems, daily requirements and the challenges they are facing. Following the visit, the Chief Minister said that the district administration and the concerned departments had been directed to ensure that all the essential needs of the affected people are met on priority.
It may be noted that the recent floods have affected 25,791 people in Golaghat district.
The Chief Minister later visited the relief camp established at Numaligarh Higher Secondary School, where 182 flood affected people, including a large number of children, have taken shelter. He spent some time interacting with the children and enquired about their well-being.
The Chief Minister told the media that the recent floods have caused widespread hardship, damaging agricultural fields and affecting livestock, while impacting a large number of families. He stated that the government is making every effort to provide adequate assistance to all those affected.
