Twelve Bangladeshi nationals, including two children, were detained by police in Assam’s Goalpara town on Friday night on suspicion of entering India illegally.
According to reports, the group allegedly crossed the India-Bangladesh border three days before being traced in Goalpara. The matter came to light when they reportedly approached a hotel seeking accommodation. The hotel owner became suspicious after overhearing their conversations and alerted the police.
Acting on the tip-off, police reached the location and took the group to Goalpara Town Police Station for questioning. During interrogation, the individuals allegedly stated that they had come from Bangladesh and had entered Assam through the Sylhet region before travelling to Goalpara.
Police subsequently detained the group on suspicion of illegal entry into the country. However, officials have not yet released detailed information regarding the identities of those detained or the legal action being initiated against them.
The incident has once again raised concerns about border security and surveillance, particularly regarding how the group allegedly managed to cross the international border and travel into the state undetected despite existing security arrangements.
Further investigation is underway, and additional details are awaited.
