A discussion programme marking the birth centenary of legendary Bengali filmmaker Ritwik Ghatak was held at Sri Kishan Sarda College in Hailakandi.
The event was organised by the Ritwik Ghatak Janma Shatabarsha Udjapan Samiti, Hailakandi, in collaboration with the Barak Entertainment Society, Silchar. Prominent personalities attending the programme included Barak Entertainment Society chairman Ajay Roy, Cine Commune member Sandeep Acharyya, chief convener of the committee Debdatta Chakraborty, noted poet Asutosh Das, Barak Upatyaka Banga Sahitya O Sanskriti Sanmelan president Sankir Chakraborty, and senior citizen Gopal Dutta, among others.
The programme began with the singing of Jyoti Prasad Agarwala’s iconic song “Jete Mor Duronir Bahiraloi” from Ghatak’s celebrated film Meghe Dhaka Tara. This was followed by a discussion session and the garlanding of a portrait of the filmmaker.
One of the speakers said that despite Ritwik Ghatak being one of the finest filmmakers from Bengal, he remains relatively less known to the younger generation. The speaker highlighted that nearly every film directed by Ghatak carried a significant social message, particularly focusing on the plight of Bengalis displaced after Partition. His acclaimed film Ajantrik was also mentioned as a remarkable contribution to Indian cinema.
The event aimed to honour Ghatak’s cinematic legacy and introduce younger audiences to his pioneering work and enduring influence on filmmaking.
