The Assam government has ordered a magisterial-level inquiry into the mysterious death of Bir Lachit Sena leader Manas Jyoti Chetia, following allegations by the organisation that he was attacked, sparking tension in Sivasagar.
Chetia was discovered critically injured beside a road in the Bihubar area on August 23 and was rushed to Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) in Dibrugarh, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Post-mortem findings revealed multiple injuries, including severe trauma to the back of his head. The circumstances leading to his death are now under investigation.
The Bir Lachit Sena has named 10 individuals in connection with the incident and alleged that Bangladeshi Muslims were behind the crime, though these claims have not been independently verified.
Tensions escalated after Sena leader Shrinkhal Chaliha accused the police of shielding those named in the FIR instead of taking action. He warned that the organisation would launch a major protest if the accused were not brought to justice.
Chaliha further alleged that several suspicious persons had entered the flood-hit Bihubar area and urged the administration to investigate.
The government-ordered inquiry will examine the circumstances surrounding Chetia’s death, the nature of his injuries, and the events leading up to him being found by the roadside.
