The entire nation has been left stunned by a heinous crime committed at the residence of an IRS officer in the Amar Colony area of the capital, Delhi. Yesterday morning, the 22-year-old daughter of a senior Income Tax official was sexually assaulted and strangled to death inside her own room. It has been reported that at the time of the incident, the young woman was alone at home, as her parents had gone to the gym. Seizing this opportunity, a former domestic help—19-year-old Rahul Meena—broke into the house and perpetrated this despicable act of violence. The accused not only raped and murdered the young woman but also looted over a lakh rupees in cash and valuable items from the house before fleeing the scene. With the aid of CCTV footage and technology, the Delhi Police managed to apprehend the accused at a hotel in Dwarka within just 10 hours of the incident. The investigation has revealed a chilling narrative. The accused, Rahul Meena, had been dismissed from his job at the residence about two months ago, following a year and a half of service. He was intimately familiar with the family’s daily routine and the location of the house keys. Police stated that he murdered the young woman—an IIT graduate—by strangling her with a mobile phone charger cable. He even attempted to open the house’s biometric safe using the victim’s fingerprints. The Delhi Police assert that Rahul has a long history of criminal activity spanning from Rajasthan to Delhi; allegations have surfaced that just hours before this incident, he had also assaulted a woman in his own village. He has currently been taken into remand, and investigators are probing whether this brutal murder was driven solely by a desire for revenge or if there was some other deeper motive behind it. This incident has once again starkly exposed the fragility of security protocols—specifically regarding the background verification of domestic workers—in the capital’s upscale residential areas.
