Schools affected by the recent floods in Sivasagar, Nazira and Charaideo will resume classes only after August 15, subject to the receding of floodwaters and completion of restoration work, Assam Education Minister Ranoj Pegu said.
More than 150 schools across the flood-affected districts remain submerged or have suffered extensive damage from floodwater, mud and silt, according to the minister.
While floodwaters have receded from some campuses, several school premises remain covered with thick layers of mud and silt, making it difficult to restart regular academic activities immediately.
The Education Department is assessing the condition of the affected institutions and undertaking necessary restoration work to make the campuses suitable for students and teachers, Pegu said.
The reopening of the schools will depend on the condition of individual campuses and the progress of cleaning and restoration work, the minister added.
The delay comes as several parts of Upper Assam continue to grapple with the aftermath of the floods, with waterlogging and damage to educational infrastructure disrupting normal academic activities.
Communities in Sivasagar, Nazira and Charaideo are still recovering from the deluge, with several areas yet to return to normal. The Education Department is expected to take a final call on reopening the affected schools after assessing the ground situation following August 15.
