Various parts of North India are currently facing a severe heatwave. On Wednesday, the temperature in the Banda district of Uttar Pradesh reached 48 degrees Celsius, which was the highest in the entire country.
In the capital city of New Delhi as well, temperatures for the past few days have been hovering between 44 to 45 degrees Celsius. In view of this, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has repeatedly issued severe heatwave warnings for Delhi.
Amidst this extreme discomfort, the India Meteorological Department has brought a piece of relieving news. The IMD has forecast that the Southwest Monsoon is likely to enter Kerala by May 26th. Although June 1st is usually the normal onset date for the monsoon in Kerala, this time it is arriving nearly a week early. For Indians scorching in the intense heat, this early forecast of the monsoon is undoubtedly a ray of great hope.
However, the arrival of the monsoon in Kerala does not mean that it will start raining across the entire country overnight. After touching the southern tip, the monsoon winds take a few more weeks to reach the rest of the country.
