New Delhi, July 21, 2025 — In a significant development during the opening day of Parliament’s Monsoon Session, Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar tendered his resignation from office, citing health concerns and the need to prioritize medical care. The resignation is effective immediately and was submitted in accordance with Article 67(a) of the Indian Constitution.
Dhankhar, 74, had been serving as the 14th Vice-President of India since August 2022, concurrently holding the position of Chairman of the Rajya Sabha. His decision came shortly after presiding over the Upper House earlier in the day.
In his formal letter to President Droupadi Murmu, Dhankhar expressed deep gratitude for her support and described their working relationship as “soothing and wonderful.” He also extended appreciation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Council of Ministers, acknowledging their cooperation and the learning he gained during his tenure.
Reflecting on his time in office, Dhankhar wrote, “It has been a privilege and satisfaction to witness and partake in India’s remarkable economic progress and unprecedented exponential development.” He concluded his note with optimism about India’s future, stating his “unwavering confidence in Bharat’s global rise and phenomenal achievements”.
The resignation has prompted speculation about Dhankhar’s successor, though no official announcement has been made. Political observers note that his departure marks a rare mid-term exit from one of the country’s highest constitutional offices.
Further updates are expected as the government initiates the process to fill the vacancy.
