Aadhaar Update: The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) is implementing stricter rules for obtaining Aadhaar cards to make them more foolproof. The UIDAI plans to use an online database to enroll adults and update their Aadhaar cards, ensuring only citizens can access them.

UIDAI steps up Aadhaar rules

UIDAI has developed a new tool for Aadhaar enrollment, enhancing verification by accessing online documents like driving licenses, PAN, MNREGS details, and electricity bills. This aligns with centralised KYC directives and ensures only citizens can access Aadhaar.

Why is govt implementing stricter Aadhaar rules?

Over the past 15 years, the UIDAI has generated over 140 crore Aadhaar numbers, including deceased ones. With infants receiving Aadhaar soon after birth, the government has tightened the norms, aiming to make it difficult for illegal immigrants to obtain the ID. The onus now lies with states to prevent illegal immigrants from obtaining or forging the document.
