The South Andaman District Administration has stepped up its efforts to enforce a tobacco-free environment around educational institutions in an effort to safeguard the health and wellbeing of students and young people. The Administration has issued stringent guidelines to reduce tobacco smoking in these vulnerable areas in accordance with the COTPA, 2003. In accordance with COTPA regulations, revenue authorities are required to prominently mark a yellow line 100 yards from the edge of any educational facility, identifying the area as a no-tobacco zone. In order to keep an eye on compliance and take harsh measures against infractions discovered within the restricted area, these officers will also often examine the area.

The district has taken a strong stance by outlawing the sale of cigarettes and other tobacco products within 100 yards of all of its schools, colleges, and other educational facilities. These steps are a part of the District Administration’s larger awareness and enforcement campaign to draw attention to the risks of tobacco use, especially among young people, and to make sure public health regulations are properly enforced. The public has been urged by the Administration to report any infractions in order to actively support the project. Residents can message 9531888844 on WhatsApp or call 03192-240127, 238881, or 1070 to reach the District Control Room. Officials have promised to maintain strict confidentiality regarding the identification of informants.
