The Mekedatu project is a contentious issue between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. Karnataka has proposed constructing a reservoir at Mekedatu on the Cauvery River to address Bengaluru’s drinking water needs and generate hydroelectric power. However, Tamil Nadu opposes this project, arguing that it would disrupt the natural flow of the Cauvery River, which is crucial for Tamil Nadu’s farmers and water supply. Tamil Nadu insists that Karnataka cannot proceed without its consent, as per inter-state water-sharing agreements.
The dispute has led to legal battles and political tensions, with Tamil Nadu taking steps, including legal actions, to prevent the project’s implementation. Karnataka, on the other hand, believes the project will benefit both states and has sought clearance from the Union Government.
