A workshop on preparing a ‘World Heritage Nomination Dossier’ for sites in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands was held on 02 June 2025, organized by the Department of Art & Culture in the Conference Hall of the Disaster Management Department. The event was inaugurated by Chief Secretary Dr. Chandra Bhushan Kumar, IAS, in the presence of senior officials, historians, and experts.

The workshop aimed to guide the A&N Administration in documenting historically, culturally, and naturally significant sites for potential inclusion in UNESCO’s World Heritage listing. Two sites—Cellular Jail and Narcondam Island—are already in the tentative list, while four additional sites have been proposed this year: Govt. Saw Mill, Chatham Island, the Karst formation of Baratang, the Nicobarese Tribal Culture Continuity in Nancowry Group of Islands, and the active Volcano in Barren Island.

Domain experts provided insights into dossier preparation and nomination processes. Chief Secretary Dr. Kumar emphasized the importance of meticulous documentation, and the event also saw the release of a heritage-focused brochure, ‘Know Your Heritage.’ The Administration is now preparing nomination dossiers to advance the inclusion of these sites in the UNESCO listing.
