Los Angeles, September 4, 2025 — Emmy-nominated actress Sophie Turner has officially been cast as Lara Croft in Prime Video’s forthcoming live-action series adaptation of the iconic Tomb Raider video game franchise. The announcement was made by Amazon MGM Studios, confirming Turner’s lead role in a project helmed by acclaimed writer and producer Phoebe Waller-Bridge.
The series, greenlit in May 2024, is being developed in collaboration with Crystal Dynamics and Story Kitchen, with production scheduled to begin on January 19, 2026. Waller-Bridge, known for her work on Fleabag and Killing Eve, will serve as creator, writer, executive producer, and co-showrunner. Chad Hodge has joined the team as co-showrunner and executive producer, alongside director Jonathan Van Tulleken.
Turner, best known for her portrayal of Sansa Stark in HBO’s Game of Thrones, expressed her excitement about stepping into the role of Lara Croft, saying, “I am thrilled beyond measure to be playing Lara Croft. She’s such an iconic character, who means so much to so many—and I am giving everything I’ve got. They’re massive shoes to fill, following in the steps of Angelina and Alicia with their powerhouse performances, but with Phoebe at the helm, we (and Lara) are all in very safe hands.”
Lara Croft has previously been portrayed on screen by Angelina Jolie in Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001) and its sequel, and by Alicia Vikander in the 2018 reboot. Turner will be the third actress to take on the role in a live-action adaptation, this time for the small screen.
Phoebe Waller-Bridge shared her enthusiasm for the casting, stating, “It’s not very often you get to make a show of this scale with a character you grew up loving. Everyone on board is wildly passionate about Lara and are all as outrageous, brave, and hilarious as she is. Get your artifacts out… Croft is coming.”
Vernon Sanders, Head of Global Television at Prime Video & Amazon MGM Studios, described Lara Croft as “one of the most recognizable and iconic video game characters of all time,” and praised Turner’s casting as a bold and exciting choice.
The series aims to honor the legacy of Tomb Raider while introducing fresh adventures for a global audience. Additional casting announcements are expected in the coming months, with the show anticipated to premiere in late 2026 or early 2027.
