A three-day training session on shrimp and mud crab farming was launched at the Fisheries Training Centre in Marine Hill. The programme is being organised by the Department of Fisheries, Andaman and Nicobar Administration, in partnership with the ICAR-Central Institute of Brackishwater Aquaculture (CIBA), Chennai. Ms. Jyoti Kumari, IAS, Secretary (Fisheries), A&N Administration, launched the scheme, which aims to promote sustainable aquaculture methods and provide livelihood possibilities for coastal communities in the Islands.
The programme is being attended by 25 recipients from the South, North, and Middle Andaman Islands. Ms. Jyoti Kumari praised the experienced team from ICAR-CIBA and encouraged participants to take full advantage of the training to improve their technical skills and revenue prospects. “Such projects not only empower individuals, but also help to improve the quality and sustainability of brackishwater aquaculture on the islands. This is critical if we are to establish the Andaman and Nicobar Islands as a major player in India’s seafood market,” she stated.
