As part of the ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao’ campaign, the State Hub for Empowerment of Women (SHEW), which is part of the Department of Social Welfare, recently organized a sensitization drive in partnership with Prayas to promote education for girls. On January 10, 2025, over 90 people attended the event, which was hosted at Pathergudda Community Hall. These attendees included members of the general public, Mukhya Sevikas, Anganwadi staff, and local community members.
Key speakers Ms. Marya Sheela, Prayas’s Incharge, and Mr. Vijay Kumar, Prayas’ Advisor, discussed important topics throughout the session, including the importance of education for girls, gender equality, and the effects of early marriage. Additionally, they clarified the significance of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses Act (POCSO). Under the direction of Ms. Reeta Devi, Nodal Officer (Hub for Empowerment of Women), the session was led by Ms. Roshni Mondal, Accounts Assistant (SHEW).
Under the direction of Mr. Ravinder Kumar, Director (Social Welfare), the Directorate of Social Welfare reaffirmed its dedication to promoting a society where the education of girls is given priority. Throughout the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, these programs play a crucial role in advancing gender equality and guaranteeing the safety and self-determination of women and girls. One of SHEW’s several initiatives to raise awareness and promote significant change in local communities throughout the region is this sensitization campaign.
