Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar has come under criticism from senior MPs for his remarks against the judiciary. Dhankhar questioned the Supreme Court’s judgment that set a timeline for the President to clear bills, arguing that the judiciary should not act as a “super Parliament” and describing Article 142 as a “nuclear missile” against democratic forces.
Senior politicians, including Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal, expressed concern over Dhankhar’s statements, calling them unprecedented and political. Sibal emphasized that judicial independence is fundamental to democracy and warned against undermining judicial institutions. He pointed out that government officials often cite Supreme Court judgments when they align with their views but criticize them when they do not.
Other MPs, including RJD’s Manoj K Jha and DMK’s Tiruchi Siva, also criticized Dhankhar’s remarks, arguing that all branches of government should maintain a fine balance. CPI General Secretary D Raja accused Dhankhar of legitimizing the misuse of Governors’ powers to undermine opposition-led state governments.
