Indian ODI captain Rohit Sharma has risen to the No. 2 spot in the latest ICC ODI batting rankings, released on August 13, 2025, despite not having played competitive cricket since the conclusion of the IPL 2025 season. With 756 rating points, the 38-year-old veteran now sits just behind Shubman Gill, who retains the top position with 784 points.
Rohit’s ascent comes largely due to a dip in form from Pakistan’s Babar Azam, who slipped to third place after a disappointing ODI series against the West Indies, where he managed only 56 runs across three matches. Former India captain Virat Kohli remains in fourth place with 736 points, continuing to be a strong presence in the format.
Both Rohit and Kohli had earlier announced their retirement from Test cricket but have committed to continuing in ODIs. Their last appearance came during India’s victorious Champions Trophy campaign in the UAE earlier this year. Rohit scored 180 runs in five matches, including a crucial 76 in the final against New Zealand.
India now boasts five batters in the top 15 of the ICC ODI rankings, including Shreyas Iyer at No. 8 and KL Rahul at No. 15. Rohit and Kohli are expected to return to action in the upcoming three-match ODI series against Australia in October, as they begin training to regain match fitness.
The rankings update reaffirms Rohit Sharma’s enduring impact in the 50-over format, even as discussions continue around his long-term role in the Indian setup.
