Ranbir Kapoor began his film career as an assistant director. Before working with Sanjay Leela Bhansali on Black, he used to help his late father and legendary actor Rishi Kapoor with his 1999 directorial debut, Aa Ab Laut Chalein, a romantic drama, and the main characters were Akshay Khanna and Aishwarya Rai. On Nikhil Kamath’s podcast, Ranbir admitted that his father was a “terrific actor,
“Ranbir said I helped my father little on a film called Aa Ab Laut Chalein, which didn’t work. My father directed that film. I realized that my father is a fantastic actor, but he is not good at making films because he doesn’t have a personality. Ranbir said, He’s very short-tempered.
“It’s very hard. To become a good director because you’re doing everyone’s job but giving them the attribute for it. You are the boss on set, and your decision is your last decision. They’ll come to you, even for color, lensing, lighting, or performance.
In the early 2000s, when Akshaye appeared on the chat show Rendezvous with Simi Garewal, Simi told him that when Mera Naam Joker and Karz co-star Rishi Kapoor said that Akshaye has attitude problems after taking him in Aa Ab Laut Chalein. However, Akshaye replied, “Does he laugh?” Akshaye simply said, “Oh yess, he has a great attitude problem. But he is a great guy, and I loved working with him and his whole family; they are such amazing people.”
The final film of Rishi Kapoor was Aa Ab Laut Chalein, directed by his late father and fabulous actor-filmmaker Raj Kapoor’s production house, RK Studios.
