Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has asserted that the success of India’s indigenous defence platforms has significantly enhanced the country’s reputation both regionally and internationally. Speaking at the Society of Indian Defence Manufacturers (SIDM) Annual Session 2025, Singh highlighted the strategic and symbolic importance of self-reliance in defence manufacturing.
Referring to the recent Operation Sindoor, Singh praised the performance of domestically developed systems such as the Akash missile system, BrahMos, and the AkashTeer Air Defence Control System. “We all witnessed how these indigenous platforms demonstrated their prowess during Operation Sindoor. Their success has not only elevated India’s standing in the region but also on the global stage,” he said.
Operation Sindoor was launched in response to the Pahalgam terror attack, which claimed 26 lives. The Indian Armed Forces relied heavily on indigenous equipment during the operation, showcasing the country’s growing capability to defend itself using homegrown technology.
Singh emphasized that India’s goal should go beyond mere assembly of defence products. “Our objective must be true technology-based manufacturing,” he stated, urging industry stakeholders to invest in innovation and high-tech production.
He also reiterated that self-reliance in defence is not just a policy slogan but a modern reflection of India’s ancient tradition of self-sufficiency. “India was once called the ‘Golden Bird’ because we fulfilled our needs from our own land. Today, prioritizing indigenization continues that legacy,” Singh said.
The Defence Minister acknowledged the contributions of not only the armed forces but also the scientists, engineers, and manufacturers who worked behind the scenes to make Operation Sindoor a success. He called for continued collaboration between government, industry, and academia to strengthen India’s defence ecosystem.
