Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, visited the Dharavi leather hub in Mumbai. The purpose of his visit was to understand the challenges faced by the leather industry workers and entrepreneurs in the area. Dharavi is one of the largest leather hubs in the world, with over 20,000 leather manufacturing units employing more than one lakh workers.
During his visit, Gandhi interacted with the leather industry workers and sought to understand their issues. He also engaged with the entrepreneurs in the area. Among the manufacturing units he visited was Chamar Studio, set up by Sudheer Rajbhar.
Gandhi’s visit to Dharavi is significant, given Congress’s ongoing opposition to the Dharavi redevelopment project, which has been handed over to the Adani Group. The visit aimed to highlight the concerns of the local workforce and entrepreneurs regarding the redevelopment project.
Gandhi arrived in Mumbai from Delhi and planned to stay in the city for the night before leaving for Ahmedabad on Friday morning. There were no scheduled meetings with Congress party leaders in the evening in Mumbai.
