Hong Kong, September 10, 2025 — India’s two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu bowed out of the Hong Kong Open Super 500 tournament on Wednesday following a hard-fought defeat to Denmark’s Line Christophersen in the women’s singles round of 32. The match, which lasted just under an hour, ended with scores of 21-15, 16-21, 19-21 in favor of the unseeded Danish shuttler.
Sindhu began the contest strongly, taking an early lead and clinching the first game with a commanding finish. However, Christophersen mounted a comeback in the second game, capitalizing on a series of unforced errors from the Indian star. The decider proved to be a tense battle, with both players locked at 19-all before Christophersen secured the final two points to seal her first career victory over Sindhu in six meetings.
The loss comes at a time when Sindhu appeared to be regaining form, having reached the quarterfinals of the BWF World Championships last month. Her early exits at the Swiss Open and Japan Open earlier this year had raised concerns about consistency, but recent performances had shown signs of recovery.
Elsewhere in the tournament, India’s women’s doubles pair Rutaparna Panda and Swetaparna Panda were defeated by Hong Kong’s Oi Ki Vanessa Pang and Sum Yau Wong in straight games, 17-21, 9-21. In mixed doubles, Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto lost to Chen Cheng Kuan and Hsu Yin-Hui of Chinese Taipei, 16-21, 11-21.
India’s top men’s doubles team, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, advanced to the next round with a win over Taiwan’s Chiu Hsiang Chieh and Wang Chi-Lin on Tuesday. Rising star Ayush Shetty is scheduled to face Su Li Yang of Chinese Taipei later in the day.
Sindhu’s defeat marks a setback in her 2025 campaign, as she continues to search for her first title of the season. With major tournaments like the China Open and BWF World Tour Finals still ahead, the former World Champion will be aiming to regroup and return stronger.
