Former Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel has urged the Tata Group to refine key aspects of Air India’s operations, particularly maintenance, following the tragic crash of its Boeing 787 Dreamliner (AI171) in Ahmedabad. Speaking to reporters on Friday, Patel emphasized the need for fine-tuning operational efficiency, stating, “After three-and-a-half years of the takeover of Air India by the Tatas, the management needs to fine-tune various aspects of running a world-class airline, including maintenance.”
The Dreamliner aircraft, carrying 242 passengers and 12 crew members, crashed in the Meghaninagar area shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad airport on Thursday afternoon, resulting in 241 fatalities, including individuals on the ground. The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB), under the Civil Aviation Ministry, is leading the probe into the incident.
Despite the tragedy, Patel described the accident as a temporary setback, asserting that India’s aviation sector remains well-managed. He highlighted the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and safety norms in place, reassuring that India’s aviation industry adheres to international standards.
Patel, who served as Civil Aviation Minister from 2004 to 2011 in the Manmohan Singh-led UPA Government, acknowledged the Tata Group’s acquisition of Air India in January 2022. He reiterated the importance of continuous improvements in airline operations, ensuring passenger safety and service excellence.
