Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) has welcomed the Indian government’s historic decision to rename Port Blair, the capital of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, to “Sri Vijaya Puram.” The organization emphasized the restoration of India’s rich cultural legacy and customs and said that it has always supported the renaming of locations that bear colonial legacies. The island’s historical significance was emphasized by the VHP, which included its use as a naval station under the Chola Empire and as a hub for the Indian independence movement. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands served as a base of operations for revolutionary independence warriors like Veer Savarkar and Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, according to the press release.
Additionally, it stated that Netaji raised the first tricolor on these particular islands. The VHP views this renaming as an homage to India’s freedom fighters, given the island’s role in the country’s prosperity and security. The group has continuously insisted that the island’s name be altered to honor Indian customs rather than British officers. The Honorable Prime Minister and the Honorable Home Minister were thanked by Vishva Hindu Parishad for their actions, which they saw as a true tribute to the country’s heroes.
