New Delhi, September 10, 2025 — Prime Minister Narendra Modi has responded affirmatively to US President Donald Trump’s recent message expressing eagerness to resume trade negotiations between India and the United States. In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter), Modi described the two nations as “close friends and natural partners,” and voiced optimism about the future of bilateral trade relations.

“I am confident that our trade negotiations will pave the way for unlocking the limitless potential of the India-US partnership,” Modi stated. “Our teams are working to conclude these discussions at the earliest. I am also looking forward to speaking with President Trump. We will work together to secure a brighter, more prosperous future for both our people”.

President Trump had earlier posted on Truth Social, announcing that trade talks between the two countries were ongoing and expressing his desire to speak with Prime Minister Modi soon. “I look forward to speaking with my very good friend, Prime Minister Modi, in the upcoming weeks,” Trump wrote, adding that he was confident of a successful conclusion to the negotiations.

The exchange marks a notable thaw in diplomatic relations, which had been strained in recent months due to heightened tariffs and India’s continued purchase of Russian oil. The Trump administration had imposed a 50% tariff on Indian goods, including an additional 25% penalty linked to energy imports from Russia. India had previously described the move as “unfair, unjustified, and unreasonable”.

Despite these tensions, both leaders appear committed to restoring momentum in the strategic partnership. Modi’s response signals a willingness to engage constructively, while Trump’s softened tone suggests a recalibration of US policy toward India.

Trade delegations from both countries are expected to meet in person later this month to advance negotiations. The renewed dialogue is seen as a critical step toward stabilizing economic ties and reinforcing the broader India-US strategic framework.
