Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the Adwa Victory Monument in Addis Ababa on Wednesday, laying a wreath in honor of Ethiopian soldiers who fought and died in the historic Battle of Adwa in 1896.
The monument stands as a powerful symbol of African pride, resistance, and unity. It commemorates Ethiopia’s decisive triumph under Emperor Menelik II, when Ethiopian forces defeated the Italian army, safeguarding the nation’s sovereignty at a time when much of Africa was under European colonial rule.
Modi’s tribute has drawn renewed global attention to the memorial’s deep historical and cultural significance, particularly in the context of anti-colonial struggles and South–South solidarity. The victory at Adwa remains a defining moment in African history, inspiring freedom movements across the continent and beyond.
