Actor Nushratt Bharuccha has credited her 2021 horror film Chhorii for transforming audience perceptions of her and opening doors to more female-led narratives in Bollywood. Known for her roles in popular films like Pyaar Ka Punchnama and Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety, Bharuccha revealed that Chhorii allowed her to explore a deeper, more challenging character, which resonated strongly with viewers and the industry alike.
In Chhorii, Bharuccha portrayed Sakshi, a pregnant woman haunted by evil spirits, a role that pushed her personal and professional boundaries. She described the experience as demanding yet rewarding, as it gave her the scope to showcase her acting range in ways her previous films hadn’t. Following the success of Chhorii, Bharuccha has been part of other female-driven projects like Janhit Mein Jaari and Akelli, and she continues to receive scripts that focus on strong female characters.
Bharuccha also acknowledged the contributions of trailblazing actors like Vidya Balan, Deepika Padukone, and Alia Bhatt, who have paved the way for female-led narratives in Bollywood. She emphasized the importance of balancing good content with practical business models to ensure the sustainability of such projects.
The sequel to Chhorii, set to release on April 11, 2025, on Prime Video, will continue Sakshi’s story, introducing new characters and challenges while retaining the essence of the original. Bharuccha expressed gratitude for the audience’s support, which has enabled the film to evolve into a franchise.
