While a clean home is often linked to good health and peace of mind, a new study suggests it might come at an unexpected cost — especially for those who clean daily using chemical products.

Researchers at the University of Bergen in Norway, in a study published in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, found that prolonged exposure to chemical cleaners can damage lung function as much as smoking one pack of cigarettes per day for 20 years.

The study tracked over 6,000 participants for several years, analyzing their lung health over time. The findings showed a significantly higher risk of asthma, breathing difficulties, and chronic lung inflammation among women who regularly used products like disinfectant sprays, bleach, and ammonia.

According to the researchers, these strong cleaning agents can gradually destroy lung tissue and cause long-term irritation in the airways. Interestingly, the same level of impact was not observed in men — likely because women are more commonly involved in regular household cleaning and are exposed to these chemicals more frequently.

However, experts are not calling for an end to cleaning routines. Instead, they recommend safer, more conscious practices:

1) Use natural alternatives such as vinegar, baking soda, or lemon juice
2) Keep windows open while cleaning
3) Wear a mask when using chemical sprays
4) Keep children and asthma patients away from chemical exposure

This study reinforces a simple truth: keeping your home spotless is important — but protecting your lungs is essential.
