Gurugram, July 11, 2025 — India’s star javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra has revealed a key technical issue in his throwing technique that he is actively working to correct, as he prepares for the upcoming World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, scheduled from September 13 to 21.
Speaking at a public event, the double Olympic medallist stated, “While throwing the spear, I tend to fall too much on my left side. In training, I don’t do that, but in competition, it happens because of the extra effort I put in.” Chopra emphasized that this flaw affects his power transfer and overall performance, and he is determined to address it through focused training.
To refine his technique and improve consistency, Chopra will undergo a 57-day training stint in Prague and Nymburk, Czech Republic, alongside his physio Ishan Marwah and under the guidance of legendary coach Jan Zelezny. The training, funded at a cost of ₹19 lakh, will continue until September 5, just ahead of the championship.
Chopra also highlighted the need to consistently breach the 90-meter mark, a feat he achieved earlier this year. “I am continuously around 88–89 meters, and my coach said he is happy, but I need to be more consistent,” he noted.
His recent performance at the Neeraj Chopra Classic in Bengaluru drew praise, though he admitted the windy conditions and technical lapses impacted his throws. Despite this, Chopra remains optimistic and focused on reclaiming the world title, having won gold in 2023 and silver in 2022.
“My next target is the World Championships, and I want to win there. Before that, I’ll plan with my coach and decide which events to compete in for optimal preparation,” he affirmed.
Chopra’s commitment to continuous improvement and his strategic training plan underscore his determination to remain at the pinnacle of global athletics.
