London, July 12 — Indian fast bowler Mohammed Siraj created a poignant moment on Day 2 of the third Test between India and England at Lord’s by dedicating his wicket celebration to late Portuguese footballer Diogo Jota, who tragically passed away in a car accident on July 3 in Spain.

After dismissing England’s wicketkeeper Jamie Smith, Siraj raised his fingers to form the number “20”, Jota’s jersey number at Liverpool, and pointed skyward in a gesture of respect. The tribute resonated deeply with fans across sports, highlighting the emotional connection athletes share beyond their disciplines.

Speaking in a video released by the BCCI, Siraj explained the personal significance of the gesture: “I got to know about Jota’s passing when we arrived for the match. I’m a fan of Portugal because Cristiano Ronaldo plays for them. It was very emotional. Life is very unpredictable. Today, I got wickets, so I wanted to make that gesture for him”.

Jota, 28, was traveling with his brother André Silva when their car veered off the road and caught fire near Zamora, Spain. Both died in the crash. Jota had recently helped Portugal win the UEFA Nations League and was a key figure in Liverpool’s Premier League-winning 2024–25 season.

Siraj’s tribute came during a high-pressure phase of the match, where India bowled England out for 387, with Jasprit Bumrah claiming a five-wicket haul and Siraj finishing with 2/85 in 23.3 overs.

The moment was widely praised on social media, with fans and fellow athletes acknowledging the heartfelt gesture. Premier League India also shared the clip, calling it a “touching tribute” that transcended sporting boundaries.
