Austin, July 23, 2025 — Inter Miami stars Lionel Messi and Jordi Alba have officially withdrawn from the 2025 Major League Soccer All-Star Game against Liga MX, prompting potential disciplinary action under league rules. The match, held at Q2 Stadium in Austin, Texas, was set to feature both players, who were selected via fan and media votes.
MLS confirmed that Inter Miami notified league officials of the duo’s absence, but no credible injury reports were submitted. According to league policy, players who skip the All-Star Game without medical justification may face a one-match suspension from regular season play. As of Thursday morning, MLS had not announced a final decision, pending discussions with Inter Miami officials.
Messi, 38, and Alba, 36, were also absent from All-Star Week events, including the Skills Challenge and public appearances. Their withdrawal has disappointed fans and organizers, given the global draw both players bring to the league.
Inter Miami head coach Javier Mascherano had previously expressed concern over their participation, citing the need for rest amid a demanding schedule. Messi has played over 2,000 minutes across 23 matches since April, including appearances in the FIFA Club World Cup and MLS regular season. He currently shares the league’s top scorer spot with 18 goals.
The All-Star Game, a marquee fixture since 1996, has evolved to showcase MLS talent against international clubs and Liga MX All-Stars. This year’s edition featured stars like Hirving Lozano and Sergio Ramos, but the absence of Messi and Alba has cast a shadow over the event’s appeal.
If suspensions are enforced, both players could miss Inter Miami’s upcoming home match against FC Cincinnati on Saturday. MLS Commissioner Don Garber stated that the league is “managing through the process” and will provide updates in due course.
