Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati criticized Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for remaining silent during the parliamentary debate on the Waqf Amendment Bill, which has now become an Act. The bill, passed after heated discussions in both houses of Parliament, includes provisions such as allowing non-Muslims to be part of Waqf Boards, which Mayawati deemed inappropriate.
Mayawati expressed disappointment over Gandhi’s silence, especially given the opposition’s claims that the bill violates constitutional principles, similar to the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). She highlighted the anger among the Muslim community and unease within the INDIA bloc over the issue. Furthermore, Mayawati accused both the Congress and BJP of failing Dalits and minorities by undermining reservation rights and welfare measures.
The BSP leader also criticized the growing trend of privatization in sectors like power, urging the government to fulfill its constitutional responsibility towards public welfare. She had earlier called for a review and suspension of the new Waqf law.
