As India A gears up for their second and final unofficial Test against England Lions, all eyes are on KL Rahul, who is set to make his red-ball return ahead of the upcoming five-match Test series against England. With the retirements of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, Rahul now stands as the most experienced batter in the squad. His performance in this match will be closely watched as India fine-tunes its lineup for the high-stakes series beginning June 20.

Rahul, who has had reasonable success in England, including two Test centuries, opted to leave for the UK ahead of the main Test squad to acclimatize to conditions. His decision to play in the India A match rather than train in rain-hit Mumbai reflects his commitment to competitive match time over practice sessions.

Though Rahul averages 33.57 in 58 Tests, most of his success has come at the top of the order. It remains to be seen whether he will continue to open the innings or shift to a middle-order role in the upcoming Test series.

The England Lions squad includes pacers Josh Tongue and Chris Woakes, who will be looking to impress and secure a spot in England’s playing XI for the first Test. With Mark Wood and Jofra Archer doubtful for the India series due to injuries, England’s fast-bowling resources appear limited.

Among the three centurions for England Lions in Canterbury, Dan Mousley has been released from the squad to play in the T20 Blast, alongside Zaman Akhter and Henry Crocombe.

Rahul’s performance in this match will be crucial as India prepares for the Test series against England. His ability to leave the ball well and adapt to English conditions will be tested over the two innings he is expected to play.

With India A looking to fine-tune their squad, this match serves as an important opportunity for fringe players to make an impact before the main Test series begins.
