The Indian Premier League (IPL) is planning to expand its season to 94 matches by 2028, according to IPL chairman Arun Singh Dhumal. This expansion would allow each of the 10 teams to play against every other team in a full home-and-away format. The proposal is part of the next media rights cycle and aligns with the growing popularity of franchise and T20 cricket.
Currently, the IPL operates with a 74-match format, which was introduced in 2022 following the addition of the Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants franchises. Initial plans to increase the number of matches to 84 by 2025 were postponed due to scheduling constraints and concerns from broadcasters about viewer fatigue. However, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is now seriously considering the 94-match format for the 2028 season.
Dhumal emphasized that the expansion would depend on securing a larger window in the international cricket calendar, which is already crowded with bilateral series and ICC events. He also noted that the quality of cricket and fan engagement remain top priorities, and any changes would be carefully evaluated to ensure they enhance the tournament’s appeal.
The IPL’s potential expansion reflects the league’s continued growth and its ability to attract global audiences. However, challenges such as scheduling adjustments and broadcaster interest will play a crucial role in determining the feasibility of this ambitious plan.
