President Droupadi Murmu was warmly received in Slovakia during her state visit, marking a significant moment in India-Slovakia relations. She was greeted by Slovak President Peter Pellegrini at the Presidential Palace in Bratislava, where she was accorded a ceremonial welcome, including a traditional Slovak gesture of hospitality involving bread and salt, presented by a couple in folk attire.

This visit is historic, as it is only the second time an Indian President has visited Slovakia, with the last visit occurring nearly three decades ago. During her two-day stay, President Murmu is set to engage in delegation-level talks with Slovak leaders, including Prime Minister Robert Fico and Speaker of the National Council Richard Rasi. Several Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) are expected to be signed, further strengthening bilateral ties.

The visit also highlights cultural and historical connections, such as Slovakia’s interest in Sanskrit studies and its translation of Mahatma Gandhi’s works. Additionally, Slovakia played a supportive role during the evacuation of Indian students from Ukraine in 2022.

A key highlight of her visit will be her tour of the Tata Motors Jaguar Land Rover facility in Nitra, showcasing the strong industrial ties between the two nations. This state-of-the-art plant, inaugurated in 2018, represents a significant investment by Indian companies in Slovakia.

President Murmu’s visit to Slovakia follows her state visit to Portugal, where she engaged with the country’s leadership and the Indian diaspora, furthering India’s diplomatic and cultural outreach.
