According to officials, 1,411 people have died as a result of the strong earthquake that slammed eastern Afghanistan on Sunday night, Al Jazeera reported. Teams are still searching for survivors after the magnitude 6.0 earthquake that injured over 3,000 people, with the majority of those killed in Kunar province. Reaching isolated, mountainous regions that are cut off from roads and cell networks presents significant hurdles for aid personnel.

India has responded to the tragedy by providing immediate humanitarian aid to aid relief efforts in the impacted area. “India extends humanitarian assistance to Afghanistan in the wake of the earthquake,” the Ministry of External Affairs wrote in a post on X. Images of trucks carrying sacks of rice and other food supplies were included in the tweet, signifying India’s determination to support Afghanistan during this crucial period.

The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) reports that the earthquake, which had a Richter scale value of 6.3, occurred early Monday morning and caused vibrations throughout the region, including some areas of Pakistan. A sequence of aftershocks with magnitudes ranging from 4 to 5 followed the initial earthquake.
