Hailey Bieber has opened up about her postpartum experience and the difficulties she faced while her social media feed was flooded with hateful comments. The RHODE founder spoke with Vogue Italia and recalled a near-death experience when doctors decided to induce labour after she leaked fluid in the 39th week of pregnancy. Hailey, 28, also spoke about Justin being a wonderful father to their son Jack Blues. She also spoke about his “deteriorating mental health” and “struggling with a serious mental disorder”.
Hailey Bieber is struggling to accept her pregnancy
Hailey and Justin welcomed Jack Blues Bieber last year, and the couple celebrated their pregnancy by renewing their wedding vows in a private Hawaiian ceremony. The model, who married the popstar at the age of 21, revealed that she had always wanted to be a mother since watching her older sister give birth to a baby girl. But when it was her turn, she admitted, “I was not prepared for anything like that at all.” Although she remembers how happy she was with the journey and said she loved her body more than ever, things changed once she reached the postpartum stage. Early labour left her shaken, and she said it would never be the same again. “Giving birth to a baby was the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life,” she said.
Hailey recalled that the pressure kept mounting. Well before her due date, she began leaking amniotic fluid. Doctors decided to induce labour using oxytocin, which induces contractions, and “a Foley balloon, a catheter-like device that is inserted into the uterus and inflated with saline solution to dilate the cervix.” She said it was the most traumatic experience she had ever experienced. But when Jack arrived “with all of his eight pounds,” she was just relieved he was healthy.
The real scare started after that. Hailey started bleeding a lot. As doctors explained, postpartum hemorrhage happens to 1 in 5 women, and if it’s not treated right away, it can lead to shock, organ failure and, in severe cases, death. Hailey said, “I had complete trust in my doctor. So I was relaxed, knowing he would never let anything bad happen to me. But I was bleeding a lot, and people die, and that’s a thought that goes through your mind.”
“Suddenly, your partner starts seeing you as a goddess, a superhero,” Hailey said, smiling. She said Justin seemed excited about this new role and told her, “I’m living the life I always dreamed of.”
Hailey Bieber on Justin Bieber divorce speculation
Hailey revealed she struggled with postpartum body dysmorphia, a condition in which you start to hate your own body. In her case, she recalled scrolling through newspapers to find the most cruel comment targeted at her or her marriage, and then feeling even worse. “And to do all of that while constantly reading fake news on the internet like ‘they’re getting divorced’ or ‘they’re not happy together anymore’ just drives you really unbelievable. I’m not sure I can even explain it. It’s a unbelievable life,” she said.
She described Justin as “an incredible father, a natural person” and a husband who truly loves her. For that reason, she stressed that most of what’s written about her is “not real.” “That’s the thing,” she said. “I have a real life. It’s what I share with my beloved family, my friends, the people who know and love me.” Speaking on their relocation rumors and Bieber’s deteriorating mental health, Hailey said, “Headlines like this, absolutely pointless, come every couple of days.” Explaining how a swarm of paparazzi started gathering outside her home to be stealthy, she said, “For us, Los Angeles has become impossible,” she adds. “We love it…” and it’s clear that the implication is “despite everything.”
In a statement previously shared with Vogue, Justin also responded to the scrutiny and defended his wife, saying, “She thrives in the spotlight, and the attention, because of her innate talent in style, business, art and fashion,” he said. “And the way she makes being a mother and wife look easy.”
