Gulshan Grover, known as Bollywood’s ‘bad man’, was seen talking about his upcoming film ‘Heer Express’ on Archana Puran Singh’s YouTube channel. The film is produced by Gulshan’s son Sanjay, who has worked as a development executive in Hollywood. Gulshan said that he is very proud of Sanjay for bringing his experience and expertise to an Indian production. He said that working on this project gave them a chance to reconnect. He revealed that Sanjay grew up away from him, as he divorced his mother.
Speaking to Archana, Gulshan said that at this stage of his life, he just wants to leave a legacy for his son and see him succeed. When Archana’s husband, Parmeet Sethi, asked Gulshan how he wanted to be remembered as a person, Gulshan said, “I want to see big successes, big achievements, but for my son Sanjay Grover. Sanjay went to study at UCLA, and one day, I had a meeting at the Hollywood studio MGM. Sanjay said he wanted to come with me because he wanted to see all the Oscars in the lobby of their office.”
Gulshan said that during a meeting with MGM’s former co-CEO Mary Parent, Sanjay kept denying everything he said. Gulshan said, “Like any Punjabi father, I felt like taking him out and beating him up. But, to my surprise, after the meeting, Mary gave her her details and said there would be a job waiting for him once he graduates. I was so proud. I felt like an idiot.”
When asked why Sanjay gave up his career in Hollywood and moved back to India, Gulshan said, “I am divorced from his mother and she lives separately. Any parent would feel that enough is enough, my son has been living outside for so many years, now we should live together. He came and we worked out an arrangement that he would stay on the top floor of my duplex house and I would stay on the ground floor. He could come and go to my house, but I was not allowed to come to his house.”
In an old interview with Hindustan Times, Gulshan had talked about his son’s ambition to become an actor. He said, “His experience of making films in Hollywood as well as watching world cinema – German, French, American, Korean – is amazing. It would take me 10 years to see as much as he sees. So his experience and exposure to not just the most talked about projects but also the hidden gems helps me get a certain kind of perspective that I don’t have.”
Gulshan said he had to ’emotionally blackmail’ his son to return to India and try his luck in acting. Sanjay has worked at Hollywood studio MGM and recently co-produced director Tarsem Singh’s film ‘Dear Jassi’. ‘Heer Express’ is directed by Umesh Shukla, known for films like ‘OMG – Oh My God’ and ‘102 Not Out’.
