Facebook is requesting permission from users to access their phone’s camera roll to propose AI-enhanced versions of their images, including those that have not yet been uploaded to the social media platform. As reported by Techcrunch, this new feature is being presented to Facebook users when they are creating a new Story, where a pop-up screen prompts them to opt into ‘cloud processing’ for creative suggestions.
When users select ‘Allow’, they grant Facebook the authority to generate new concepts from their camera roll, which may include collages, recaps, AI restylings, or photo themes. The company indicates that for this feature to function, it will continuously upload media from the camera roll to its servers based on factors such as time, location, or themes.
Facebook further indicates that by consenting to Meta’s AI Terms of Service, users permit the analysis of their media and facial characteristics by an AI, and the company will utilize data along with the presence of individuals or objects in the images to create innovative concepts.
“Upon sharing, you consent to Meta analyzing those images, including facial characteristics, through AI. This processing enables us to provide groundbreaking new features, such as the capability to summarize image content, alter images, and produce new content derived from the image,” the AI terms from Meta specify.
These terms also assert that Meta AI is entitled to “retain and use” any personal information provided by users to tailor its AI outputs. Furthermore, it mentions that the social media behemoth can examine users’ interactions with its AI, including conversations, and these evaluations will be performed by human reviewers. Allegedly, Meta does not offer much clarity regarding what it defines as personal information, other than stating that it encompasses “information you submit as Prompts, Feedback, or other Content.”
