The Congress party has strongly criticized the United States for allegedly placing India and Pakistan on the same diplomatic footing, calling it a major setback for India’s foreign policy. The party has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to set aside his “stubbornness” and convene an all-party meeting along with a special session of Parliament to address growing concerns.

Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh expressed concerns over reports that Pakistan Army Chief General Asim Munir has been invited to an event in Washington, DC, marking US Army Day on June 14. He described the development as a “big blow for India from a diplomatic and strategic point of view”.

Ramesh further pointed out that General Munir had previously used provocative language before the Pahalgam terror attack, questioning America’s intentions in engaging with Pakistan. Adding to the controversy, US Army General Michael Kurilla, Commander of US Central Command (CENTCOM), recently stated that Pakistan is a “great partner” of America in the fight against terrorism. Congress leaders argue that such statements undermine India’s diplomatic stance and diminish decades of diplomatic progress.

The Congress party has called on PM Modi to convene a special session of Parliament to discuss the diplomatic implications of the US stance. Ramesh emphasized that India’s diplomatic position is becoming increasingly uncomfortable, especially after an Indian delegation recently briefed global leaders on Pakistan’s role in terrorism.

“The Prime Minister should now leave aside his stubbornness and concern for prestige and call an all-party meeting and a special session of Parliament, so that the nation can clearly express its collective will and present a concrete roadmap for the country,” Ramesh stated.

Congress leaders have also questioned the Modi government’s handling of the situation, particularly in light of Operation Sindoor, India’s ongoing counterterrorism efforts. The party has demanded clarification from the government regarding US-Pakistan relations and their impact on India’s security. With tensions rising over US-Pakistan relations, the Congress party continues to push for a unified national response. The demand for a special Parliament session reflects growing concerns over India’s diplomatic standing and the future of Indo-US relations.
