A political storm has erupted in Madhya Pradesh as Congress MLAs launched an indefinite sit-in protest outside the Raj Bhavan, demanding the dismissal of Tribal Affairs Minister Vijay Shah from the state cabinet. The protest, led by Leader of Opposition Umang Singhar, comes in response to Shah’s controversial remarks regarding Colonel Sofiya Qureshi, a senior Army officer.
On Friday morning, a delegation of Congress legislators met Governor Mangubhai Patel and submitted a memorandum urging immediate action against Shah. Following the meeting, the MLAs, dressed in black as a symbol of dissent, staged a protest outside the governor’s residence, chanting slogans and calling for the minister’s resignation.
The controversy stems from Shah’s remarks at a recent public event in Indore district, where he allegedly implied that Colonel Qureshi was linked to terrorist activities. His comments sparked outrage, leading the Madhya Pradesh High Court to take suo motu cognizance of the issue and order the registration of an FIR against him.
Speaking to the media, Singhar emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating, “It’s been three days, and Shah has not been sacked yet. We want his resignation, and hence, we have taken to the streets.” He further asserted that the Congress would continue its protest until the minister was removed from office.
The opposition’s agitation has intensified ahead of a crucial Supreme Court hearing on Shah’s plea. On Thursday, the Apex Court reprimanded the minister for his remarks and scheduled the hearing for Friday.
Colonel Sofiya Qureshi gained prominence after briefing the media on Operation Sindoor, a military operation launched by the Indian armed forces. Her contributions to national security have been widely recognized, making Shah’s comments all the more controversial.
As the political standoff escalates, security has been heightened around the Raj Bhavan and Shah’s residence. The Congress has vowed to continue its protest until action is taken, while the ruling BJP remains silent on the matter. With legal proceedings underway and public outrage mounting, all eyes are on the government’s next move in this unfolding crisis.
